By innovation, we mean going beyond business as usual.
We want to support innovations that have both an economic benefit – creating, sustaining and growing businesses – and that make the world a better (smarter, healthier, more diverse, more interesting) place.
Clwstwr will fund innovative ideas relating to either screen or news which will result in new products, services or experiences that:
Explore new ways of telling our stories
Create new forms and formats of short or medium-form screen content.
Develop new - as yet unimagined - creative formats.
Create new forms of informational storytelling.
Television isn’t dead – it still commands huge audiences - but it is changing rapidly. We know, for example, that younger audiences are drawn to watching short-form content on mobile devices e.g. S4C’s Hansh. To successfully create new formats means addressing issues including:
- Creating business models that sustain new forms of online content;
- Combining existing storytelling talent with the needs and interests of a new digital generation;
- Devising engaging content that works across different platforms and screen sectors;
- Experimenting with new immersive technology, geotagging, 360 content and hybrid products.
Engage and build audiences and markets in new ways
Develop new models and forms of delivery designed to reach and engage new audiences.
So, for example, the dramatic decline in under 35’s engagement with reliable journalism has been replaced by an informational mix that combines credible and unreliable sources. In this case, we would be are looking for ideas that:
- Develop new informational genres that draw upon (or combine) data sets and/or work across a range of platforms;
- Develop new technologies or platforms that enhance the business model for public interest news.
Other possibilities might involve developing international audiences for screen content. This could mean developing new informational genres that draw upon (or combine) data sets and/or work across a range of platforms.
Exploit skills in bilingual and multilingual production at home and internationally.
Wales is uniquely placed as the UK’s centre for bilingual media production. For a major production centre like the UK, this is a major asset. We are interested in new ways to:
- Exploit this know-how to develop international markets for bilingual design and content-creation;
- Connect bilingual production with new technologies e.g. voice recognition, 5G.
Create new ways of working to build sustainable business models
Create new products and services to strengthen business models, practices or the infrastructure for production.
The focus here is on innovations that enhance creative activity, or make it more sustainable, efficient or profitable. So, for example, there is potential to:
- Use the growth of the voice economy (e.g. Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Siri, Cortana) and spatial computing (e.g. Pokémon Go, Magic Leap) for new content formats and platforms;
- Develop interactivity, user generated content or data capture to make new businesses possible, or to make existing businesses more effective or efficient.
Create collaborations between people and companies from different creative and technology sectors.
Innovation is more likely to happen if it draws on ideas and expertise from across the creative industries. We are keen to support innovative projects based on partnerships between freelancers and/or small businesses from different creative and technology sectors. These kinds of fusions allow us to think about how the screen or news sectors might:
- Imagine new forms of communication and entertainment;
- Enhance people’s quality of life;
- Address big issues e.g. climate change, poverty, creating a well informed public.
Create content that builds new Intellectual Property (IP) and exploits existing IP opportunities.
The best way for creative business to thrive in the long term is for them to identify their IP early and then find ways to keep and further develop it. If the creative economy in Wales is to become fully sustainable, micro and small businesses need to spot IP opportunities. We will support innovation that:
- Develops new screen content formats – and secures IP - with the potential for income generation;
- Builds collaborations to extend IP around new content in development (e.g. merchandise, books, games).
We do not want to limit people’s imaginations by being too prescriptive. These challenges are a guide - if you have a screen innovation which falls outside of these then we still want to hear from you!
