Clwstwr is committed to supporting the development of an inclusive news and screen sector for Wales, one which reflects our communities both on and off-screen.
We have a responsibility as a funding body to understand the impact of our work and whether we are truly shifting the dial in terms of equitable access to research and development funds. We also have a responsibility to share what we know, and what we don’t know.
The insight we have gained from this report will help us to consider the way we work, support and communicate with the sectors we serve. However, we know that this is just a snapshot and there is more work to be done. Together with the quantitative data in this report, our team are continually speaking with people with different lived experiences to help us shape our thinking and activity, employing a user centred design approach to research, create, test and alter our methods to reflect the feedback we’ve received.
We know that many may feel that research and development isn’t for them. We want to demystify this work and help to overcome the barriers some may face. Without those voices, we will miss out on truly innovative and transformative ideas which will help to build an ethical and sustainable media sector for Wales.
Inclusion lead Sally Griffith said: "We are still a relatively new funder, and we have been listening, learning and making changes at every step – which we’ll continue to do. It’s exciting that we are supporting a growing number of projects who are working to make our media sector more accessible and more meaningful to people who have historically been misrepresented and badly served. Our media helps to shape how we see ourselves and those around us and so having diverse perspectives leading that is essential. So many of our projects start with idea that mainstream media doesn’t work for them and it’s so inspiring to work with them to start the change that’s needed."
